Fresh off of seeing the all-new Ford Explorer take home honors as the 2011 North American Truck of the Year, another Ford SUV added to the company’s trophy case in Detroit when the Vertrek was named Best Concept of the 2011 North American International Auto Show by the editors of AutoWeek.

According to the publication: “Ford has been so focused on serious stuff such as small cars and fine-tuning production models that it hasn’t had a lot of time to craft concepts capable of turning heads at auto shows. Enter the Vertrek. It blends European styling with the practical needs of Americans. The best part is that Ford design boss J Mays says this concept is very close to the look of the next Escape.”

That “look,” developed by Ford’s top designers and engineers from around the globe, is an evolution of the same kinetic design philosophy showcased on cars like the new Ford Fiesta and Focus. On the Vertrek concept, this approach takes the form of touches like the vehicle’s rising beltline, which creates a notably athletic stance, as well as its dynamic character lines and taut surfaces, which add a further dash of boldness to the exterior.
